Private jet charter to Cannes Film Festival 2018

The countdown to the Cannes Film Festival 2018 has begun! If you’re considering travelling to the Côte d'Azur by private jet charter, here’s what you can expect from Cannes 2018.

What to expect from the 71st Cannes Film Festival

Cannes 2018 promises to be an illustrious affair, with the inimitable Cate Blanchett taking the helm as President of the Jury. Cinephiles also have the privilege of seeing the latest instalment in the Star Wars franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story – directed by Ron Howard and starring Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton – before it opens on the commercial cinema circuit. This year’s festival opens with the much-hyped Everybody Knows, a Spanish drama directed by Asghar Farhadi and starring Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem – a trifecta of star power if there ever was one.

While the official selection is notoriously unpredictable and a closely guarded secret until the week before Cannes Film Festival kicks off, a plethora of features have been pegged as worthy contenders, including:

  • Beautiful Boy, directed by Felix Van Groeningen and starring Steve Carell, Timothée Chalamet and Maura Tierney
  • That’s Love, directed by Claire Burger and starring Boulí Lanners, Justine Lacroix and Sarah Henochsberg
  • The Beach Bum, directed by Harmony Korine and starring Matthew McConaughey and Isla Fisher
  • Burning, directed by Lee Chang-dong and starring Yoo Ah-in, Steven Yeun and Jeon Jong-seo
  • The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, directed by Xavier Dolan and starring Natalie Portman, Jacob Tremblay, Bella Thorne, Kit Harington and Susan Sarandon

Where to get in on the Cannes 2018 action

Cannes Film Festival is tightly packed in an area of no more than two square miles, as the crème de la crème of the cinematic industry descend on the seaside town. The majority of events take place on and around the infamous Promenade de la Croisette, famed for its picturesque views of the Mediterranean and star sightings. Main venue the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès sits at one end, with photo-calls and live interviews spilling out further along La Croisette. Lined by grand hotels and swanky bars thronging with paparazzi and celebrities, this is the place to witness the Cannes Film Festival in all its glory.

Where to stay

Visitors are spoiled for choice when it comes to luxury accommodation in the French Riviera town. If you want to be at the heart of the action, staying in one of the hotels located near La Croisette, the Palais des Festivals and Le Suquet is your best bet. La Croisette boasts several celebrity haunts offering luxury amenities and silver spoon service. To be close to the action while avoiding the clamour of paparazzi and sightseers, several quieter luxury boutique outfits offer visitors the best of Cannes without the crowds.

Where to play

There’s no shortage of entertainment as Cannes turns into a playground for the rich and famous. If you fancy dancing the night away while rubbing shoulders with the likes of Tyga, David Guetta and Busta Rhymes, head to the town’s biggest club, Gotha. If the lines are too long there, try Le Baoli or Chrystie, two upmarket clubs where the elite go to see and be seen. If you’ve got money to burn and fancy rolling the dice, head to Casinos Barrière or Les Princes; or for a relaxed nightcap in opulent surroundings, pop into Bar l'Amiral at the Hotel Martinez, where award-winning cocktails, live jazz and art deco decor welcome weary guests after a day of networking.

Take advantage of free screenings

While badge-holders have the luxury of access to the full Cannes 2018 lineup, there are several ways to catch a screening during the festival even without a badge:

  • View the full festival line-up courtesy of Cannes Cinephiles
Free screenings of the entire Cannes Film Festival lineup are held in four venues in the vicinity: La Licorne, Studio 13, Alexandre 111 Theatre and Raimu. While ticket preference is given to those with a Cannes Cinephile card, non-members can join the ‘Last Minute Line’ to get theirs. As with all other free screenings, arrive early to secure your spot.
  • Al fresco screenings on Mace Plage
The Cinema de la Plage screens “Cannes Classic” films throughout the 12-day festival on Mace Plage – the beach adjacent to the Palais and directly opposite the preeminent Hotel Majestic. Blankets and chairs are provided but are snapped up quickly, so make sure to arrive early to snag the best spot. No tickets are required.
  • Avant-garde up-and-comers during the Critic’s Week Section
If new wave, experimental cinema is up your alley, don’t miss out on the Critic’s Week Section. The jury includes Golden Globe-winning actress and director Chloe Sevigny, the poster child of independent cinema and star of cult hits including American Psycho, Kids and Boys Don’t Cry. Tickets are free from a booth next to the Miramar Hotel at 35 rue Pasteur. Get there early, as tickets are limited, with preference given to badge-holders.
