Epsom Derby History

The first Epsom Derby took place on 4th May 1780 and was devised by the 12th Earl of Derby and the Jockey Club president Sir Charles Bunbury. Apparently, the pair spun a coin to determine who the race would be named after. Although the Earl won the title, Bunbury’s horse Diomed won the first mile-long Derby. Today, the race has become a national sporting event attended by over 150,000 spectators, including The Queen and celebrities who come decked out in the latest spring fashions.

Legendary Derby winners include Sea Bird, the 2016 champion Harzand, and Shergar, who won by the biggest ever margin of 10 lengths in 1981 and was later notoriously kidnapped. Another famous Derby moment came in 1913, when suffragette Emily Davison ran out onto the track in front of King George V’s horse and was killed. Today, the Epsom Derby has been lengthened to a mile and a half and the race record stands at 2:31.33, set by Workforce in 2010.
