Jet-setting in style at the Coachella festival 2018

We sat down with celebrity stylists Nicole Pollard Bayme and Courtnee Scully of LALALUXE for an insider’s take on how to be the best-dressed at Coachella 2018.

About Nicole and Courtnee

Nicole Pollard Bayme founded international style firm LALALUXE in Los Angeles in 2005. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength and today Nicole and lead stylist Courtnee Scully work with celebrities, VIPs and some of the world’s biggest influencers to create their signature looks. LALALUXE offers fashion styling, personal shopping and the sourcing of hard-to-find luxury items such as Hermès bags and rare watches.

Thanks for joining us, Nicole and Courtnee! First things first: tell us a bit about what you do.

Nicole: I love to travel almost as much as I love clothes, so my signature mantra for LALALUXE is “Live every day like a vacation”. Our clients often call upon us to style and pack for their luxury vacations. I like to tell a story with clothes and it often begins with the destination for inspiration. Coachella is a great example of telling a story through your outfit. We create a theme and go crazy with it.

Courtnee: The sky's the limit as far as extravagant holidays go, and Coachella is no different – our clients are used to VIP service even in the middle of the desert. I educate my clients on how to dress for their bodies while helping them to incorporate the newest trends into their wardrobe. Coachella is the perfect setting to experiment with new looks.

Coachella is as well-known for its fashion as for its lineup of musical superstars. Could you describe the ‘lineup’ of styles one can expect to see at the festival this year?

Courtnee: With Beyonce headlining this year, we expect many of the trends on the desert floor to pay homage to Queen Bey herself. Expect early 2000s-inspired athleisurewear and cut-off shorts paired with sexy bodysuits, and matching two-piece ensembles.

Nicole: We will see bohemian styles again this year, but we advise our clients to stand out from the crowds and try something new… and pretty please, ditch the flower crowns.

What sets Coachella apart from other festivals in terms of style, outfits and fashion?

Nicole: Coachella was the first festival to really have an influence on social media, so the youthful “flower child” vibe that hit the desert floor many seasons ago went viral and became the signature look of festival-goers worldwide. That being said, the bohemian vibe of Coachella in years passed has had its day, and we advise going for a more current look this season.

What are some of the hottest trends you’re expecting to be front and centre at Coachella 2018?

Courtnee: More is more this season at Coachella. Expect mix-matched patterns, head-to-toe athletic wear and lots of see-through PVC accessories in the form of clear visors and mini backpacks.

Accessorizing is a must at festivals, both for style and function. What are some of your must-have Coachella accessories?

Nicole: The accessory du jour for Coachella 2018 is the waist belt (also known as a fanny pack), but worn high on the waist instead of slung low on the hips as it’s traditionally been styled.

Courtnee: Other accessories that will make you stand out from the crowd are late 90s-inspired sunnies in bright shades and layered gold jewelry. Go for an ear cuff paired with thin gold hoops and layered chain necklaces.

Any style or outfit no-goes to avoid this year?

Nicole: Like we said before, the boho look is over as far as we are concerned.

Courtnee: It’s been so overdone. Go for more athletic pieces and pay attention to the trends we’ve listed above. Trade your wide-brimmed hat for a chic cap in a bright color.

Do you have any makeup tips on how to stay looking fresh throughout a weekend of partying at Coachella?

Nicole: Our festival makeup mantra is “Less is more”. Flawless skin is our favorite look and we achieve it by wearing SPF 50 sunscreen religiously, as well as seeing celebrity facialist Vanessa Hernandez and of course drinking Bikini Tea to detox skin impurities before and after the weekend.

Courtnee: At Coachella, your body is as important as your face. Before the festival, we detox by upping our workouts and cutting out sugar. Nicole and I always follow the Bikini Cleanse 7 Day Weight Loss System the week before a big event. Nicole is the creator of this food-based meal replacement plan and she made it specifically for our clients. We give it to them before they travel and they beg for it before every trip.

Coachella is a star-studded affair. What are your celebrity style highlights from previous years and whose outfits are you most looking forward to seeing this year?

Nicole: While we always love seeing what celebrity and blogger “it girls” like Kendall Jenner, the Hadid sisters and Cami Maronne are wearing, we also love taking style advice from the concert-goers themselves – especially the teens who put together looks from decades past with a new twist.

Courtnee: I have a passion for men’s styling, so this year I’m really looking forward to seeing how the male artists style their looks – especially Miguel.

For those traveling across states, countries or continents to get to Coachella, do you have any advice on outfits that work well for travel as well as at the festival?

Nicole: For our clients, who mostly fly private, we treat air travel as an extension of their time at home. It’s important to be comfortable, especially when traveling for long distances. We recommend dressing how you would at home and bringing your festival clothes in a weekend bag.

Courtnee: It can be cool in the air and really hot when you hit the desert floor. Instead of wearing layers, which we recommend when clients fly commercial, we suggest bringing a change of clothes. This way, they’ll hit the festival looking refreshed. Private air travel is a great opportunity to incorporate the sportswear look whilst still feeling comfortable.

As stylists, you undoubtedly have your own preferences when it comes to style. Care to walk us through your ideal wardrobe for Coachella 2018?

Nicole: As stylists, we push our clients to try new looks, but I definitely have a signature style which tends to gravitate towards worldly, folk-style clothing mixed with touches of luxury. My ideal outfit for Coachella would be an Innika Choo linen mini dress, Nike Cortez suede sneakers and a vintage Chanel waist-pack worn crossbody over my shoulder.

Courtnee: I have an edgier and more androgynous approach to fashion and will be at Coachella in a graphic tee, track shorts, a Gucci mini backpack and layered jewelry.
