The G20 Summit will be held at the Hamburg Messe und Congress in the heart of the city. The first evening of the summit will include a working dinner at the Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg’s newest cultural landmark. Set alongside the river Elbe, the venue – which opened on 11th January 2017 – features concert halls, a hotel, private apartments and a public viewing area with panoramic views of the city. The showpiece of the venue is a visually stunning concert hall set 50 meters above the ground in the historic port. The working dinner will feature a performance by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, led by celebrated conductor Kent Nagano.
The focus of the summit will be the mastering and shaping of the global challenges of our age. In advance of the summit, Chancellor Merkel poses the question: “Where is the world economy headed?†She expresses concern at the sluggish development of the world economy, and stresses that the G20 must cooperate to improve this issue.
In Chancellor Merkel’s words, “At the height of the economic and financial crisis, we collectively expressed our support for allowing competition to shape the world economy and for ensuring that world trade remained open. The G20 countries moved closer together in these times of crisis and developed shared mechanisms without resorting to protectionism.†She is encouraging G20 to come together once again.
Chancellor Merkel plans to hold a broad dialogue featuring input from groups that span many facets of civil society. She has asked representatives from NGOs, business, trade unions, think tanks, academia, women’s organisations and youth organisations to recommend actions for the G20. She will use their input to guide the G20’s discussions throughout the summit.
The G20 is comprised of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the European Union. The other parties in attendance will likely be a number of international organizations, including the World Bank (WB), the Financial Stability Board (FSB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations (UN).
